Possible solutions

A number of solutions have been proposed and need to be discussed by residents before a case can be put to Westminster Council who were are sure will do all they can to protect our children and help the street safe and calm. We need your support and thoughts, whether you live in the street or not.

Speed bumps

Speed bumps and raised platform could be put in in the street and at junctions. However these are costly, their effectiveness is questioned as people speed between them, it doesn't solve the issue of vehicles passing, can cause damage and impede emergency vehicles.

20 mph speed zone

Traffic speeds could be legally restricted to 20 mph which is known to significantly reduce fatalities and serious injury in collisions with pedestrians.

20 mph speed signs

A relatively cheap, yet apparently effective system is street signs that flash up a 20 or 30 mph reminder or, better flash up the driver's speed if over the limit. But would this deter the selfish minority who are the majority of our problem and again doesn't solve the passing problem?

Mini roundabouts

Small, white discs could be painted in the road at junctions forcing cars to slow down and give way to the right, but with little traffic from side roads wouldn't cars just speed down Saltram and over the white discs regardless?

Chicanes

Where the pavement is built out, forcing cars to drive through a chicane and slow down. But they can speed between chicanes and they'd be expensive to install.

Gates

We could ask to have Saltram gated to stop through traffic but we are advised that the council will not allow this due to the risk to emergency vehicles.

One way system all the way

The whole of Saltram Crescent could become a one way street, up or down. This would solve the passing problem, but be an even better, faster rat run with no worry about running into anything.

One way system split in half

To solve the problem of a one way race track down Saltram, the road could be split : one way up to Fernhead Road from say Denholme or Croxley and one way down to Shirland Road. This would instantly stop Saltram being a rat run and in conjunction with a 20 mph limit/signs solve the speeding issue at very low cost - just a few signs and road markings. No digging up.

A one way system could also create more parking spaces as cars could be parked at 45 degrees to the pavement creating about 50% more spaces.

Tell us what you think in our questionnaire here. It's only take a few minutes to fill in.
